The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) in its bid to drive renewable energy in the country has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) on 19th October, 2016 at NYSC Complex Maitama Abuja.

In his address at the event, the Director-General of Energy Commission, Prof. E.J. Bala stated that this partnership programme which is in line with the mandate of the ECN was introduced in 1999 as a training scheme on renewable energy technologies for serving Youth Corps members.

He added that selected Corps members are trained on basic knowledge of renewable energy and associated technologies. According to Prof. Bala, the programme has so far successfully trained over eight hundred (800) Corps members.

The Director-General stated that after 17 years, it was only imperative to re-assess and renew the programme, by outlining new objectives in a revised MoU in line with the dynamics of the present.

He explained that the renewed partnership is threefold with respect to renewable energy; Enhanced Awareness Creation; Business and Market Development and; Social Change. Adding that the annual training of youth corps members will now aim at producing business oriented and self-reliant youth in renewable energy; creating the market for RE technologies and; using it to bridge the gap between modern energy demand and supply in rural areas for positive social change.

Prof. Bala however stressed that, for the success of this new partnership, there is a need to solicit the collaboration of all relevant national agencies that grant loans/grants, follow up with trained corps members and closely monitor and evaluate the implementation on a yearly basis; adding that the Department of Renewable Energy of ECN will be responsible for the implementation of this MoU.
