Nigeria Bolsters Innovation as ECN DG Endorses Youth-Led Tech Solutions at NBTI NextGen Challenge Kick-Off
Nigeria is intensifying its push for innovation-driven national development, with Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), endorsing youth-led technological solutions at the launch of the National Board for Technology Incubation’s (NBTI) NextGen Innovation Challenge 2025. Speaking at the kick-off ceremony today at NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja, Dr. Abdullahi praised the initiative as timely and inclusive, engaging all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to unlock the potential of Nigerian youth in advancing technology and economic transformation.
Dr. Abdullahi highlighted the critical role of innovations like AI-powered smart grids, predictive maintenance, energy storage systems, and electric vehicle infrastructure in shaping Nigeria’s energy future. These technologies, he noted, enhance grid stability, improve energy access, and provide cleaner solutions for underserved communities.
He emphasized ECN’s commitment to research and collaboration, pointing to its six energy research centres nationwide, including the Renewable Energy Barefoot Academy and facilities focused on green hydrogen development, which are driving sustainable local solutions.
Urging participants to “dream big, innovate boldly, and push boundaries,” Dr. Abdullahi stressed aligning innovations with Nigeria’s climate and energy transition goals. He commended Dr. Kolawole Raji, Director-General of NBTI, for his visionary leadership in conceptualizing the Challenge, and wished all participants success in the NextGen Innovation Challenge. The initiative, he noted, fosters collaboration among government, academia, and the private sector to scale transformative innovations for national development.
