Who are we?

The Energy Commission of Nigeria came to being through the enabling Act No. 62 of 1979, as amended by Act No. 32 of 1988 and Act No. 19 of 1989.

ECN is the apex government organ empowered to carry out overall energy sector planning and policy implementation.

The Commission commenced operation in 1989 after the meeting of the Heads of ECOWAS on 29th May 1982 in Cotonou, where a decision was taken that each member state should establish by law,a body within the machinery of government, to be charged with the responsibility for coordinating and supervising all energy functions and activities within each Member State and may be called ENERGY COMMISSION of each Member State (see for Official Journal of ECOWAS, Protocols, Decisions & Directives, Vol. 4, June 1982, pg 50).

Meet the Honourable Minister

Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology for Nigeria. He leads the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST).

In August 16, 2023, Uche Nnaji was appointed as the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi assumed office as the 4th Director General of Energy Commission of Nigeria on Tuesday 24th October 2023.

Empowering communities and industries for a greener future.

Dr. Abdullahi has over a decade of experience from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), with a significant background in the Energy and Space Technology sectors. He is a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE) with proven leadership and management abilities in the areas of Energy, Hybrid Wind and Solar Energy harvesting systems, Oil Spills Management, Engineering Management, Structural Health Monitoring, Oil and Gas engineering, Strategic Planning and Research.
